A Heartbreaking Loss in the COVID Ward
On the quiet afternoon of January 24, 2021, during the overwhelming peak of the global pandemic, heartbreak struck the isolation wards of Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham, England. An 83-year-old grandmother, fighting severe COVID-19 complications, tragically breathed her last at exactly 1:56 PM. As medical monitors flatlined and a grief-stricken family prepared to mourn from afar due to strict lockdown rules, the hospital room became a scene of sorrow and solemnity. The Audacious Theft and Vending Machine Spree
A mere seventeen minutes after the patient’s official time of death, 23-year-old healthcare assistant Ayesha Basharat entered the deceased woman’s room, seized her personal belongings, and pocketed her contactless bank card. Without showing the slightest trace of hesitation or remorse, Basharat walked directly to the hospital’s vending machine. Using the tap-to-pay feature, she carried out six consecutive one-pound contactless transactions to purchase bags of crisps, sweets, and fizzy drinks. Not satisfied with her initial spree, she used the stolen card again that same evening for another transaction. Four days later, upon returning to her scheduled shift on January 28, she brazenly attempted to use the dead woman's card two more times. Fortunately, the victim’s alert relatives had already spotted the unauthorized charges on the bank statement and immediately cancelled the card, prompting local police to launch a swift criminal investigation.
Caught on Camera and Convicted in Court
West Midlands Police arrested Basharat on the spot while she was still wearing her medical uniform and working on the ward. When officers searched her belongings, they found the victim’s bank card tucked away in her possession. Basharat initially attempted to spin a web of lies, claiming she had found the card on the hospital floor and mistakenly mixed it up with her own. However, prosecutors dismantled her excuses at Birmingham Crown Court, pointing out that her own card was a completely different color and that security cameras captured her staring intently at the vending machine transactions.
